Have you heard about an artist by the name SYML? Don’t get discouraged if you haven’t. Despite some of his songs getting a lot of attention (platinum-certified single “Where’s My Love”) and being used in TV shows, he still remains relatively unknown. Unless you’ve been following his music over the years, there’s a big change you missed his amazing songs.

And believe me when I say it: Brian Leseney Fennell, the man behind the solo project SYML, deserves your attention. His music is something you need to hear. It’s just that good. Even if you are not primarily into pop or indie, or alternative pop, SYML best songs go beyond the genres. They are pure gold of music. Genuine, exquisite, melodic, charming, heartfelt, calm, touching.

Who is SYML? Short Bio of the Artist

SYML is a solo project of Brian Leseney Fennell. The title “SYML” means “simple” in Welsh and sounds like “sim-muhl.” This choice is a nod to his Welsh roots, inherited from his biological parents.

Brian Fennell is from Issaquah, Washington. where he lived with his adoptive parents. He graduated from Seattle Pacific University and went back to his roots in Issaquah, where he composes and produces music from the comfort of his home studio.

IIn 2019, he released a self-titled debut album featuring the Platinum hit “Where’s My Love”. The song was featured in the TV show Teen Wolf, leading to significant chart success. The 2021 album “DIM” is inspired by his late father’s battle with cancer.

Music Style of SYML

SYML’s music style is rooted in Brian Fennell’s personal experiences and heritage. It’s a wonderful combination of his classical music background with modern, emotive songwriting. He likes to use minimalistic yet rich blend of piano, synth, and strings. On top of it he adds great vocals. All that creates a distinctive, immersive sound, unique to SYML. It’s often very emotional, deep, with dark and sad tones. Though he also has light and hopeful compositions.

What makes SYML so special?

A huge talent and the ability to transform feelings into music. That’s how I can describe SYML’s special ability. When I listen to his music I find myself reminiscing of my past, of my life journey, of various events that happened sometimes many years ago. This can’t be achieved with music that is not 100% sincere. SYML is like a doorway to some of the memories that we almost forgot are there.

Once again I was facing the dilemma of choosing just a single song as the best. The “problem” is that SYML has many awesome songs. Some are dark, sad or calm. And some are dynamic, more up-beat. But If need to select only one song it’s a tough battle between “Body” and “Fear of the Water”. Today let’s go with the later:
