What Kind of Music is M. Ward?
M. Ward has elements of different genres in his music. The most prominent are folk, indie, blues, and what some call Americana. But it’s not which genres he uses, it’s HOW he does it. The man is a fan of vintage sound with a raw, analog quality, and you can definitely feel it in his songs. Soft acoustic guitar combined with always pleasant vocals, add a relaxed, almost nostalgic vibe to his compositions.
That doesn’t make his music old school though. As Ward has stated himself, his favorite albums often have surprises. So he also likes to mix things up from time to time. Be ready to hear a quite versatile sound, depending on what album you are listening to. Sometimes it can have a more notable experimental indie rock or indie-pop vibes, and then it can switch to a folk ballad tone.

M. Ward Quick Biography
M. Ward (born Matthew Stephen Ward) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Glendale, California. He has recorded and released ten solo albums since 1999. An interesting fact: for all his solo recordings he used the same four-track tape recorder from his teen years. Being an avid fan of analog production style, this gives his music a quite distinctive sound.
Apart from solo work M. Ward also participated in several collaborative music projects. He is a part of the indie pop duo She & Him with Zooey Deschanel. Their partnership began in 2006 and lead to multiple well-received albums.
In 2009 he joined Jim James, Conor Oberst, and Mike Mogis to create a folk super-group called Monsters of Folk. A very fitting name if you look at the members and their individual accomplishments. Their debut album was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.
