Discover Hidden Alternative Metal Gem: Staind

As I was writing about Nu Metal genre and how people view it now, I also remembered that I haven’t covered a band called Staind yet. They reached their popularity peak right around the golden era of nu metal, in early 2000s. And are often considered one of the bands that represented that music genre.

Yet, the music created by Staind doesn’t really sound like your typical nu metal. It does have some elements of it, but it’s different. It’s way more alternative metal and it’s definitely unique. It always stands out when compared to their contemporaries.

If you want to hear superb melodic metal songs with elements of grange, hard rock, and a bit of nu metal vibe – you got to try Staind.

Who are Staind? Short Bio

Staind is an American rock band from Springfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1995. The current lineup includes Aaron Lewis on vocals and rhythm guitar, Mike Mushok on lead guitar, Johnny April on bass and backing vocals, and Sal Giancarelli on drums.

The band released their debut album, Tormented, in 1996, followed by the successful Dysfunction in 1999. Their third album, Break the Cycle (2001), was a major hit, featuring the single “It’s Been Awhile” and going five times platinum. The concert version of “Outside” with Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit was a surprise super hit, heavity played on radio stations.

Staind continued to release albums and tour, though their activity slowed in the 2010s as Lewis pursued a solo country music career. They released a total of eight studio albums, with their latest, Confessions of the Fallen, put out in 2023.

Music Style of Staind

Staind’s musical style can be described as a fine blend of elements of nu metal, hard rock, post-grunge, and alternative metal. Their create nice heavy riffs, emotional and intense vocals, with really personal lyrics.

The songs cover topics such as depression, addiction, relationships. They often reflect Aaron Lewis’s personal experiences and thoughts. I always enjoyed this style of composing. It feels genuine.

Their sound has evolved over the years from a heavier to more melodic. The melodic part is what always brings me back to the band. Combined with Lewis’s amazing vocals it always sounds great.

What makes Staind so special?

The band’s ability to combine heavier metal sound with great melodies and Aaron Lewis voice creates a superb sound. It’s like no other band. Their biggest hits are some of the best rock songs you will ever hear, period. They are that good.
