Ben Howard is widely considered as one of the biggest artist of the Indie Folk music scene. And I totally agree with this notion. He was one of the first musicians that really got me into that style of music, and his early albums have been one of my favorite for many years now.

Benjamin John Howard was born around 1986 or 1987. Yep, this is exactly what wiki page says, the specific year is a secret. He is a talented English musician known for his indie folk and experimental music style. He began his music career with EP titled “Games in the Dark,” in 2008. Then he followed with 2 more EPs: “These Waters” in 2009 and “Old Pine” in 2010. Island Records took notice and signed him up.

In 2011, Howard launched his first full-length album called “Every Kingdom,” which was a big hit, reaching number four on the UK Albums Chart. In 2013 he was awarded “British Male Solo Artist”, and “British Breakthrough Act”. So a really successful start for sure. Ben released 5 studio albums, with the last being “Is It?” in 2023.

In later years Ben expressed that he was trying to get away from the folky singer image, and his music somewhat reflects that. So there’s more to his discography that just indie or folk.

Music Style of Ben Howard

The first 2 albums by Ben Howard put him in the category of the biggest indie folk stars out there. He is often credited as one the main singers who actually popularized the genre. And rightfully so. These were amazing albums that gained Ben a lot of fans around the world. The melodies are very intricate and pleasant, they definitely break the stereotypical tunes you might expect. His voice is quite distinctive and recognizable. The lyrics are intimate and interesting. It’s indie folk at its finest.

He also has a particular style of guitar play. He is playing left-handed or even turning right-handed guitars upside down. He dives into alternate tunings like CGCGGC and DADGAD, giving his music a fresh sound.
