Discovering Hidden Music Gems: The Mayan Factor
This is the first entry in the ongoing series called “Discovering Hidden Music Gems”. In this category you can always find great new bands, solo artists and their best songs.
The chances are you probably have never heard about most of the artists mentioned in here. They either never got into major radio rotations and big charts, or simply stayed in those for a very brief period. But they made discovering them even more exciting. Either way these are some of the best artist and some of the most amazing songs in their respective genres.
The star of today’s article is The Mayan Factor.
Who are The Mayan Factor? Short Bio
It is a band from Maryland, who started back in early 2000s. They released their first EP in 2003, which already showed how talented and original these guys were. With a mix of beautiful melodies, captivating lyrics and powerful memorable vocals, the Mayan Factor sounds like nothing else. They have released two full-length albums, “In Lake ‘ch” (2003) and “44” (2005).
Unfortunately the lead singer Ray Schuler died in 2011 leaving the band on the crossroads. It was a tragedy that could only heal with time. But the group did come back together a few years later with a new singer to continue their music journey.
Music Style of The Mayan Factor
The genre they play in is a variation of progressive rock. However it is very fluid and can spill to other sub-genres super easy. The best way to describe it is “unique”. Their sound is not heavy on riffs, but the guitar is very prominent. The main focus is on the melodic side of their songs.
Best Songs
I don’t remember which of their song I listened first, but I got hooked right away. Today I’ll to share one of my favorite ones called Warflower. I believe it is a perfect one to first hear the unique sound of these talented guys. Just grab you best headphones, sit back, relax and enjoy.
And here’s the lyrics to The Mayan Factor – Warflower
Rain falling around me
Can’t tell if weather is warm
Or why I am cold?
Fame falls all around me
Can’t tell if I should just hide or run
Some people hold onto their misery
A token of their lives
Painted faces, warlike, they march on
Feel the end near, blinding and screaming
For blood they’d do anything
Got two tickets to Peridon, just can’t sleep
I’ve got no reason to worry ’cause it’s just a dream
On my way to the classroom, lit the fire
It’s a burning desire
Murder, water is needed
Hate seems always following
Can’t tell if I can run, can’t find my way outside
Hate seems always following
Can’t tell if I should just run or hide
Some people hold onto their misery
A token of their lives
Painted faces, warlike, they march on
Feel the end near, blinding and screaming
For blood they’d do anything
Got two tickets to Peridon, just can’t sleep
I’ve got no reason to worry ’cause it’s just a dream
On my way to the classroom, lit the fire
It’s a burning desire
Murder, water is needed
Water is needed
Water is needed
Water is needed
Got two tickets to Peridon, just can’t sleep
I’ve got no reason to worry ’cause it’s just a dream
On my way to the classroom, lit the fire
It’s a burning desire
Murder, water is needed
Water is needed
