Before The Dawn: Discover Hidden Death Metal Music Gem

If you’ve read my other articles you probably noticed that I enjoy many totally different music styles. In the end it all depends on my mood and comes down to a particular artist. Truly great music knows no genre boundaries.

That said, I always liked metal and rock. These genres have so much to offer. They are an endless source of awesome music and have plenty of creative bands. Another great thing about Metal music is that there are so many sub-categories within this genre. There’s speed metal, folk metal, doom metal, trash metal, death metal, gothic, etc. And there’s also Melodic Death Metal, which has been one of my all time favorite styles.

In Melodic Death Metal, there’s a band that not many people know about, even though they’ve been around for almost 20 years. They’re called Before the Dawn, and they’re one of the best bands in the genre.

Before the Dawn is a melodic death metal band, formed by Tuomas Saukkonen in Finland in 1999. They’ve released 8 studio albums and performed around the world with several iconic metal groups. Tuomas is the main artistic force of the band, and is a celebrated multi -instrumentalist. He also did the harsh vocals in most of their songs.

Despite a couple big lineup changes Before the Dawn is still active and writing new songs. The latest change was adding Paavo Laapotti as the lead singer, instead of Lars Eikind. Before the Dawn might not be as widely known as some of their peers (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity), but they are definitely worth your attention.

Music Style of Before the Dawn

Before the Dawn’s music style is a creative burst of melodic death metal. They have all the necessary ingredients: heavy guitar riffs, fine melodies, harsh growling combined with clean vocals. Its a superb sound that has just the right amount of aggressive and melodic elements.

What I like the most is how they time and time again mixed the intensity of death metal with beautiful melodic passages. Also their songs very ion tempo and rhythm, so you don’t get easily bored with their music. Many of their best hits I got on repeat.

What makes Before the Dawn so special is their ability to blend the raw intensity of death metal with beautiful melodies. It was done through talented music composing but also by combining two different vocal styles. Tuomas Saukkonen performing harsh parts and Lars Eikind sining in clean voice. This created a sound that’s both powerful, emotional and so pleasant to listen to.

Their melodies are so good that they remain in your memory even after a single play-through. I remember that I heard a part of their song called Hiding (without knowing who that band was at the time) and it stuck in my head for a year or so. Right until I re-discovered the song and then the band behind it. It was a super pleasant surprise.
