Monsters Of Folk Best Songs
For folk and indie music fans a very exciting moment came in the mid-2000s, when Monsters Of Folk was formed. This new band brought together 4 popular artists who decided to collaborate, write, and perform new amazing music as a new group. And boy, did they succeed!
Monsters Of Folk has released just one album – a self-titled debut in 2009. In September 2024, they put out a deluxe version of it with five new songs. Being a fan, I listened to their songs on repeat for years. So naturally I’ve checked the Deluxe version as well.
I’ve picked the band’s Best songs out of the 20 they’ve releases so far. Consider it the ultimate Monster Of Folk playlist. 🎵🎧 Enjoy!

Who Are the Monsters Of Folk?
Monsters Of Folk is a indie folk supergroup consisting of:
- Jim James from My Morning Jacket
- Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes
- M. Ward
- Will Johnson (unofficial 5th member, and a touring drummer)
The band formed in 2004 while they all were on a tour with their respective groups or as solo artists. They developed a close bond after jamming together on and off stage. It took several years to record it, but in 2009 a self-titled album Monsters Of Folk finally came out. The album did great in charts (reaching 15 on the Billboard 200) and was well received by the fans.
How did Monsters Of Folk get their name? – The band adopted a playful nickname given to them by the tour’s road crew.
What Genre is Monsters of Folk?
Even though their own name suggests that the band is pure folk, it’s not that simple. The idea for the Monsters Of Folk was to combine and explore each member’s music style and ideas. And the result is fantastic – we, fans got a superb tasty blend of folk, rock and indie genres.
The sound differs from the band-mates individual work. It is a great stand alone style of M.O.F. Each artist brought their own magic, threw it into a pot, and we get to enjoy this awesome mix.

Monsters of Folk Second Album
Music fans (me included) have long hoped for a second Monsters Of Folk album, but unfortunately it hasn’t happened yet. Despite hints from the band members over the years, the only thing we got was a recent release of the deluxe version of the debut album to celebrate it 15th anniversary. So, no – there’s no second album.
I get it, they each are busy with their own projects. But as years go by, I’m still holding to the hope that one day they will come together once again to create something special.
