Ray LaMontagne is one of the best folk artists of the last 20+ years. He has released songs that went viral and became household favorites for millions of music fans. It’s no coincidence that I included his marvelous hit ‘Empty’ in the Best Indie Folk Songs Of All Time chart.

About Ray LaMontagne

Ray LaMontagne is a singer-songwriter from New Hampshire, US. He is known for his soft, husky voice, deep meaningful poetic lyrics and unique sound. His debut album “Trouble” (2004) became hugely successful, propelling Ray to the top of the folk scene. Many of his songs became iconic, even among fans of other genres. Compositions like ‘Trouble’ and ‘Hold You In My Arms’ have been covered and featured in TV shows many times. It seems like no season of The Voice or American Idol can go without at least on of his songs being covered by the contestants.

Ray LaMontagne has released 8 studio albums, with Long Way Home (2024) being the latest one.

In 2006 Esquire awarded Ray a Best Voice title. As for musical awards, Ray won a Grammy in 2011 for Best Contemporary Folk Album with God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise. He was also nominated for the BRIT Awards for International Breakthrough Act in 2007.

Ray LaMontagne remains one of the most popular folk artists to this day. At the date of writing this article he has more than 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Ray LaMontagne has a very distinctive sound. His voice is so unique, it has this soft silky raspiness to it. It’s like the man was destined to become a folk singer. But it’s not only the voice alone. Ray is an exceptional lyricist. He writes beautiful songs that combine elegant melodies with emotional storytelling.

Through the years he has been compared to other notable artists like Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Brian Adams. And while this is true, you can hear certain elements inspired by them in his songs, Ray LaMontagne is his own artist. He also likes to add blues and rock vibes to his songs, so there’s always something interesting and fresh.
