Discovering Hidden Music Gems - Gunship

Discovering Hidden Music Gems: Gunship

Do you like electronic and synthwave tunes? Maybe you enjoy old 80s anime hits and amazing music from that era? If you do, then you are in for a treat. Today I’m happy to present you a wonderful band called Gunship. Gunship takes all that awesome energy from the best entertainment pieces of the 80s and puts a modern spin on it.

The band is a trio of super talented musicians, who bring us something from the past years, something that we didn’t know we were missing until we first hear it. And when we do hear it – oh, it is truly amazing music. The energy, the feeling it evokes. The catchy melodies that stay with you.

If I were to describe this band’s energy, I’d use this analogy. It’s like you meet an old dear friend whom you haven’t seen for many years. But when you do meet again, there’s no lost connection, the feelings of friendship are as strong as ever. You start at the same spot where you left off. A pure joy.

Gunship is a British synth-wave band formed in 2014 by Dan Haigh and Alex Westaway. Alex Gingell who is a drummer joined the band later on to form the current lineup. Their debut release self-titled “Gunship”, became available in 2015. It got very positive reviews. They followed it up by “Dark All Day” released on October 5, 2018. Again gaining great feedback. The band released their third studio album titled Unicorn on September 29, 2023.

The band has also collaborated with other artists, both on their own and guests projects. For the latest news you can always check their official website and socials.

Musical Style of Gunship

Gunship’s music style can be categorized as synthwave, 80s electronic, synth-pop, retro-synth. Their music is rich with electronic sounds but it comes with a clear and super enjoyable retro-futuristic touch.

Depending on how familiar you are with 80s movies, cartoons, comics and music, you might experience feelings of nostalgic, cinematic, and melancholic vibes when listening to the band. Gunship doesn’t shy away from using synthesizers. But they also incorporate great vocals and live instruments.

What makes Gunship so special?

Gunship’s music is rather unique. While they go for a retro-futuristic sound in their songs, they are careful with their approach. They never want to become a caricature for the music of that era. Instead it is an original sound that manages to captures the 80s magic, and is kinda rare nowadays. I mean for every great synthwave band there’s 10 mediocre ones.

Gunship’s music is so inspiring. With one song you might feel Terminator movie is wroth watching again. With the other track you may remember that you still haven’t watched last episode of Stranger Things. And with the next song you might just think of something completely random, but most likely something interesting.

Their music is universal in terms of where and when you can listen to it. For example I can chill and have them on the background while reading a book. Or have them in my headset while working. Or vibing to their hits on the road. I haven’t experienced this myself, but I bet they sound just as good in the spaceship blasting through stars in vast oceans of space.

Best Song by Gunship

Gunship has released three albums so far, so there are many cool tracks to dive into. Selecting the singular best song is not easy with these guys. While hits like “Tech Noir,” “Dark All Day,” and “Taste Like Venom” are fantastic choices to get a feel for the band, I recommend another one.

Start with “When You Grow Up, Your Heart Dies.” This is absolutely on of their best. It has a calmer, more mellow flow. But it also has this unmistakably great Gunship vibe. It’s the perfect introduction to the band’s unique sound.

If you enjoy this music, don’t stop yourself. Listen to the whole discography of the group. Or you can have fun with this custom playlist, that I have prepared. These are the TOP 10 hits by Gunship.
