Discovering Hidden Music Gems: Anberlin
How about some catchy easy rock tunes that are a perfect listen during a home ride, or while chilling on the couch. Or just something that makes you pause and think about life. I know these may look like completely different scenarios. But that’s what is so good about music by a band called Anberlin. They can take you on very different journeys and you will enjoy all of them.
I first heard their music in early 2000s and was immediately attracted by their sound and how distinctive the lead singer’s voice was. Anberlin is a great combination of cool melodies, catchy lyrics and memorable vocals. I also remember that I was going through a rough patch in life and that I was listening to quite different music at the time. Anberlin was one of the bands that had a rare ability to easy my mood when it was low. They were not too heavy and not too light. It was very a balanced sound that could take my mind of ongoing troubles.
Many years have passed and I am in a completely different place in life now. But the songs that were so good back then are still just as great. Shows that real music always stands the test of time.
Who are the Anberlin? Short Bio
Anberlin is an American alternative rock band from Winter Haven, Florida. The band was formed in 2002 by Stephen Christian (vocals), Joseph Milligan (guitar), Deon Rexroat (bass), and Nathan Young (drums). Christian McAlhaney (guitar) joined the band in 2007. The band broke up in 2014, but reunited in 2018.
On October 10, 2023, Stephen Christian announced that he was taking an indefinite hiatus from the band. Singer Matty Mullins is to become Anberlin’s new live lead vocalist.

Music Style of Anberlin
Anberlin’s music style can be described as alternative rock, pop rock and indie rock. The band’s style was influenced by artists like The Smiths, U2, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Radiohead.
Radiohead can actuality be responsible for the band’s name – Anberlin. According to the lead singer, when he was listening to Thom Yorke singing “Everything in Its Right Place”, in the middle of the song the background noise sounded like Anberlin. And he thought it would be a good name for the band. Turns out he was right.
In Anberlin music the prominent role goes to catchy melodies and of course the vocals. The rhythms are often pretty dynamic. The band’s sound hasn’t stayed the same over the years. It actually evolved from album to album. It can vary from more punk-oriented style to pop, and even to more dark and experimental sound. The band didn’t shy from using electronic, acoustic and orchestral elements either. So it is a very interesting blend of styles.
What makes Anberlin so special?
The sound of Anberlin is very recognizable. First of all the the lead vocals are hard to confuse with anyone else. But also the riffs and the rhythm. They simply work extraordinarily well together. And you don’t get tired of it.
One thing that always make them stand out for me is how cool their cover versions of other popular songs are. Listen to their cover of Love Song by The Cure or True Faith by New Order. They are excellent.

Anberlin has 7 full albums by the time of writing of this article. So there are plenty to chose from when it comes down to selecting the best song. I have several close calls but if I am to pick one perfect song to introduce the band to you it must be Soft Skeletons.
This is one of their absolute best tracks in my opinion. Released in 2008 it never lost its attraction and will always find its spot in my playlist.
