You gotta admit – Billy Idol is a cool memorable name. Though before he became known as such he was born as William Michael Albert Broad. Billy is a British-American singer, songwriter and musician. He first gained fame in the 1970s as the lead singer of the punk rock band Generation X.

Idol then moved to New York City in 1981 to start his solo career. That’s when he teamed up with guitarist Steve Stevens. His debut album, “Billy Idol” (1982) was a great success and featured hit singles like “Dancing with Myself” and “White Wedding”. Those songs made him a hit on MTV.

Idol’s second album “Rebel Yell” (1983) was a major success with hit singles such as “Rebel Yell” and “Eyes Without a Face.” This album went double platinum in the US!

After taking a break in the late ’90s Billy Idol made a comeback with “Devil’s Playground” (2005) and “Kings & Queens of the Underground” (2014).

Music Style of Billy Idol

Billy Idol’s music style is a perfect blend of punk rock, rock and pop elements. He did start in the punk rock scene with Generation X, so as you can imagine his early music features fast-paced and rebellious vibes.

As a solo artist and in cooperation with great Steve Stevens he combined that punk foundation with a more complex rock sound (and some nice guitars). His best songs feature awesome catchy hooks and melodies that just stay in your mind forever.

One more part of Idol’s music that can’t be ignored is his strong visual element. I mean the man has a truly iconic look. And his charismatic presence always played a huge part in his appeal with the audience. It definitely helped to make his music videos for songs like “White Wedding” and “Rebel Yell” super popular on MTV.

Fun Fact About Billy Idol

There’s plenty of interesting facts and stories about Billy. His life is one big extraordinary story in itself. Starting from huge fame, to battles with substances, performing before huge crowds, and his incredible comeback.

But a nice fact, which not so many people know about, actually comes from a popular TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 – 2003). One of the main (and beloved by the fans of the show) characters was a vampire named Spike. Played by talented James Marsters, the look of that character was heavily based on the appearance of Billy Idol. I mean look at the pictures yourself:
