Have you heard the name Anneke van Giersbergen? If you haven’t – consider yourself a lucky person. Because you are about to discover an absolutely amazing music star. A beautiful female artist that has the voice of an angel. And that voice is somehow perfectly capable to sound extraordinarily awesome in opposite genres like rock and pop.
Anneke is easily one of my favorite artists. She has the rare ability to catch your attention with the simplest of tunes and hold it the entire song, or album. And she is a wonderful live performer. You know how they say – “it sounds just like the studio version”. Well, she does that and even better.
Who Is Anneke van Giersbergen? Short Bio
Anna Maria “Anneke” van Giersbergen, is a Dutch singer, born in Sint-Michielsgestel, Netherlands. Her love for music was pretty apparent from a young age, as she has been singing since 7 years old. Her first band was called “Bad Breath” and the music was a mix of blues, jazz, folk and funk.
She became famous as the lead singer of the rock band The Gathering, which she joined in 1994. After starting her solo journey in 2007 she released music under the name name Agua de Annique. But later reverted back to using Anneke van Giersbergen instead.
Anneke teamed up with multiple bands, artists and participated in numerous musical projects. Just to name a few: Devin Townsend, Within Temptation, and Anathema. While it’s definitely impressive, it’s not surprising at all. Her vocal abilities and talent are a rare thing.

Music Style of Anneke van Giersbergen
The great thing about Anneke is that while she has roots in classical and jazz music, that did not stop her from being a real rock and pop star. She can seamlessly apply and adapt her amazing voice to any genre. It’s a beautiful voice that can touch the deepest corner of your soul in one song. And then charge you up with great rock energy in another one.
So her music style is very much dependent on which of the bands she performed in you are listening to.
What makes Anneke van Giersbergen so special?
As I’ve mention before, Anneke is a super talented vocalist with a rare feel for beautiful music. I think her main strength is a pure ability to shapeshift her permanence depending on the genre.
For example, I first heard her when I discovered the band called The Gathering. It was so many years ago, when they used CDs that I kinda feel old now. The Gathering is a great Progressive and Alternative rock group and with Anneke as a lead singer they easily won a permanent spot on my playlists.
But when Anneke left The Gathering and started her solo career, I found out that her solo songs and acoustic performances are just as amazing. So there’s literally a song for everyone, where you prefer rock or pop.
