P.O.D. – Discover Hidden Nu Metal Gem

Nu Metal is getting a lot of undeserved hate lately. It seems like there’s a trend to hate this particular genre of music. And that’s despite nu metal being one of the more popular subgneres of metal. Moreover it was absolutely THE most popular style of metal music in late 90s – early 2000s.

In fact Nu metal made heavy music mainstream back in that time period. TV shows, radio rotations, huge live tours and festivals featured headlining bands like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, P.O.D. and others. Today I want to put some spotlight on one of the best bands in the genre – P.O.D.

Absolute icons of the alternative metal genre, P.O.D. (abbreviation from “Payable on Death”) is that popular band that you somehow might have missed. And if you did, you got awesome new music to discover and enjoy now.

P.O.D. is an American alternative and nu metal band that originated in San Diego, California, in 1992. The band consists of vocalist Sonny Sandoval, bassist Mark “Traa” Daniels, and lead guitarist Marcos Curiel. They first gained mainstream success with their third studio album, “The Fundamental Elements of Southtown,” which went platinum in 2000. Their next album, “Satellite,” featured hit singles like “Alive” and “Youth of the Nation,” and achieved triple platinum status. Over their career P.O.D. has sold over 12 million records worldwide, and received three Grammy nominations. They’ve also contributed to several movie soundtracks.

The band is sometimes called as a Christian group, even though as stated by Sonny Sandoval himself it’s more so about personal beliefs and lyrical messages in their songs and not a label being put on them by others. In their music P.O.D. often addresses social issues and personal struggles. They have experimented with various musical styles but have always remained true to their roots in rock.

Music Style of P.O.D.

P.O.D. delivers a versatile fusion of music styles, primarily combining elements of nu metal, rap metal, and alternative metal. Their sound is unique to say the least. I always admired how they seamlessly produce and mix together aggressive guitar riffs, energetic drumming, powerful vocals with rapping and slow, super melodic soft tunes. You can hear elements of reggae and Latin in their songs as well. It’s quite a unique flavor of music.

If you go through the band’s discography you will recognize all these styles coming up to the sun and having their best time. The talent, the inspiration, the dedication to their craft helped the group to make awesome songs for around 30 years. It’s fair to say they stood the test of time.

Also while many will try to deny the band’s connection to nu metal (for various reasons) I am strongly convinced they are one of the greatest bands of that genre. And there’s nothing to shun away from.

What makes P.O.D. so special?

The unique sound, extremely creative music that mixes so many styles and influences. Powerful lyrics, strong vocals, amazing melodic songs, raw energy of metal, and always-present soft touch in the places where you might not expect it.

P.O.D. has maintained their own sound and style for decades like rare bands could. This is probably the main reason why they have such a devoted fan base.

And a couple words about their name. Not that THIS is what that make them so special, but it certainly adds to the band’s overall mythology. The name P.O.D. stands for “Payable on Death”, a term coming from a banking phrase used to describe how funds are transferred upon the account holder’s death. For the band though, the name carries a deeper, spiritual meaning. It symbolizes the belief that because Jesus Christ died, the debt of sin for believers has been paid. And therefore they have inherited eternal life. I love this meaning behind a name.

Best Song by P.O.D.

I like P.O.D. a lot, obviously. Been a fan since I first heard them many years ago. Selecting the one single best song is a tough thing to do, because they have so many great hits. From different albums, with different messages and with different energy.

So in this case I will give you two songs instead of one. One is a relatively calmer tune and the other with heavier sound. And if you like what you hear be sure to check out this Playlist of P.O.D. 15 Best Songs, available on YT or Spotify.
