The Midnight – One of Synthwave Best Bands
Synthwave is one of the newer music genres that won millions of fans in a really short period of time. It came in the right moment with the right vibe, and became a favorite for so many people, me included. There’s just something about this music style’s vibe and feel that makes it so attractive.
I’ve already covered FM-84, and now I want to introduce another awesome synthwave band called The Midnight. If you are just starting to discover this sub-genre, The Midnight may very well become one of the permanent residents in your playlist. Enjoy!
Who are the The Midnight?
The Midnight is an American synthwave band formed by singer-songwriter Tyler Lyle and songwriter-producer Tim McEwan. The two met in 2012 and bonded over their love for retro synth sound. Interestingly both were inspired by the score of the movie Drive.
In 2014 the duo released their debut EP Days of Thunder. It was followed by LP Endless Summer in 2016 and Nocturnal in 2017. The band further developed their own style with albums Kids (2018), Monsters (2020), Heroes (2022).
In 2024 Tim McEwan stepped back from touring to focus on creating new music. Check their official website for latest tour dates.

The Midnight’s Musical Style
The Midnight’s musical style encompasses all the great elements of synthwave genre. You get amazing nostalgic 1980s sounds, sweet synthesizer melodies, spectacular saxophone solos (absolutely crazy good sax!), cool drums. And it’s all done under modern electronic production.
Their music is like a time-machine that bring back memories of classic ’80s movies, shows and culture. The bands motto is “mono no aware.” Which translated from Japanese means an appreciation for the beauty and sadness of life’s fleeting moments. And it really captures the emotions you often get when listening to their wonderful songs.
