Anathema: Discovering Hidden Music Gems
A true pioneer of the death and doom metal, this is one of the most interesting bands that not so many people (besides the fans of the genre) know about. Which is a shame, because this band deserves attention from more than just metal fans. The group has experimented with other genres and created absolutely amazing music.
So whether you prefer heavier music, or you enjoy lighter alternative songs more, don’t miss on this hidden gem. I have listened to hundreds and hundreds of bands. Anathema is definitely unique. While they have disbanded a few years ago, their albums remain as their great heritage.
Who are the band Anathema? Short Bio
Anathema was an English rock band from Liverpool, formed in 1990. The original members included Vincent and Daniel Cavanagh, bassist Jamie Cavanagh, drummer/keyboardist John Douglas, and vocalist Darren White.
The band gained initial popularity among fans of metal and toured extensively. In their later years, they played at prestigious venues like London’s O2 Arena, Wembley Arena, and the London Palladium, even sharing the stage with Stephen Hawking at Starmus Festival 3. Anathema announced their indefinite hiatus on September 22, 2020.
With 11 studio albums under their belt Anathema left a long lasting impression on the lucky fans who discovered the band. The group went through serious changes in their music style over the years, and was never afraid to experiment and mix the genres.
Music Style of Anathema
Anathema’s music style evolved from death/doom in their early years to gothic and alternative rock later on. The first albums Serenades (1993) and The Silent Enigma (1995) are the best example of doom metal you can find.
By the late 90s, they leaned into alternative rock with progressive rock. The sound became more alike to atmospheric rock. Despite lineup changes their sound remained atmospheric and introspective throughout the years up until they stopped. One common characteristic of their music – is that it’s never in a hurry. It takes time to develop in each song. They are masters of slow paced melodies.
These changes in style is something we do see with other bands. But it”s a rare thing’s quite rare when the band is so damn good in all their experiments and evolution.
What makes Anathema so special?
One thing for sure, these guys were a very talented group of individuals, who by fate or by chance came together and created some amazing music. And they did it throughout many years.
If you like slow, heavy, emotional and raw metal, their first albums will definitely be your favorite. If you prefer unique, atmospheric and very melodic alternative metal/rock, their albums from 1996 – 2000 will secure a spot in your playlist. And if you are a fan of alt rock, you need to check their later albums.
Best Song by Anathema
If you have never heard this band before, it’s difficult to name a single best song, since they have have albums in different genres and styles. But today I recommend “Lost Control” from Alternative 4 (1998) album.
